I usually bring two pairs of walking options on my walking holidays because you never know when you are going to need salvation and this year is no exception.
One of the two pairs will definitely be my new Vibram FiveFingers! Yesterday's walk was awesome - I felt as light as a feather although I'm still getting used to the positioning of the baby toe.
I knew going into my walk yesterday that a change in footwear can bring on a change in form so I was interested in discovering what that change would result in. Well, today I can honestly say that my FiveFingers allowed me to work muscles that have not been previously worked out all summer. I'm a tiny bit sore in my calves and in my hip flexor but that soreness is nothing compared to the thrill of knowing that my legs are going to be in even better shape now that there has been a shift in muscle focus.
Because I weened myself off of typical walking/running shoes, I am not suffering as I assume someone might if he or she attempted to make an abrupt change. Word to the wise: DO NOT go out and buy a pair of FiveFingers, strap them on, and then head out for a hard hours' walk or run. If you are currently running or walking in traditional footwear, make sure you follow the instructions and wear your FiveFingers a bit at a time to get used to the difference or you could end up in a world of hurt.
So, what's LaPointeOfItAll? Well, it's that Vibram FiveFingers rock and I will be wearing them as my main footwear while hiking on the Isle of Skye nine days from now! Three cheers for the upcoming 5th annual Girls Walking Holiday! Hmm, or is it the 6th annual...
