Yesterday, we went to Ikea and fell in love with some kitchens.
We've done this before, only to come home and measure and plan and think and give up: our kitchen is very small and seemingly odd sized because we can't ever get the Ikea kitchens to work, despite the combos we try. Yet we always go back and think this time we can make it work.
And then we can't.
Yesterday was no exception: we went, we saw, we loved, we measured, we planned, we finagled, we tried, we hoped.
We almost made one work, too, but when I priced it out the cost was WAY more than their advertised special and about $5000 more than refinishing our cabinets and DIYing the rest according to the plan I made in the post below.
Oh, and yeah - it was almost working but not. And I really like the plan I made below and I want to follow through with it; Matt agreed.
I am positive it's going to be a knock out when it's done.
And with the money we save, we can do SO many things: buy a new flat screen, a MAC desktop for Matt, install hardwood in the bedroom (and maybe in the carpeted area of the living room).
Really, it's a no brainer for us because Matt's handy, I'm handy, and I have a plan.
Our proposed budget for the DIY project? I am estimating that refinishing the cabs, installing new countertops, a new floor, open shelving (I forgot to mention that the other day; I'm glad I'm on the same wavelength as my friend who suggested it) a backsplash and purchasing all new appliances (fridge, range, dishwasher, above range microwave/fan) will cost $2500.
Let's see how close we come to meeting that budget!

Good luck with that budget. Oddly enough I perused the "home appliance" section of The Home Depot this weekend...something I haven't done since tagging along with my dad at the age of say, 10? Anyway, I was shocked to find that you can spend $2700 on one (very nice) stainless steel refrigerator.
ReplyDeleteSo, if you get the inclination to totally blow your budget, that's a good place to start.
And for the record, today I went to school (and shouldn't have) and totally DIDN'T workout afterward. I am now back on the couch surrounded by mountains of used tissues. (Here's to not running when you really don't want to...)
Good luck with that! Sigh, you're making me wish I owned a place to remodel it and fix it up. I seriously can't wait to see how everything turns out. (And, after reading about your very very busy days that start at an ungodly morning hour, I'm already SO impressed you have time to fit all that in!)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I would really love to hear more about the novel you're writing sometime! Even though I'm in an MFA program, very very few people I know are novelists, and it's harder to commiserate about like ... how I've physically lost something in the massive amounts of sheer text or something. ;) And I would really love the contact info for your agent acquaintance! I'm sure I'll be making the rounds with as many agents as I can find.
